This book, once found, can't be ignored
Though it contains things once abhorred.
Just read it once, and you'll agree,
Nereena's one night creature spree
Is just the thing you've waited for
To make the autumn so much more,
Than just another season spent
Awaiting winter's long descent.
Fairies have been resident in the human imagination for many centuries. In fact, their very existence relies on being imagined. The FantaFairies series of books, drawings and other artifacts exist to preserve and encourage that magical human energy that makes the existence of fairies possible, and makes our human lives more interesting and enjoyable.
Many know of the improbable city of Venice, Italy, perched off of the northeastern Italian coast, just barely keeping its head above the rising Adriatic Sea. This city, too, exists and survives (and some would say fully depends) on the imagination and dreams of mankind. This makes it the natural place of origin for an entire species of fairy, called FantaFairies, who issue forth from this improbable place to embrace and protect the far-flung cities, towns and hamlets, the holidays, the music, art and other yearnings most precious to the mortal humans chasing their dreams across the surface of the Earth.
This is the story of one FantaFairy in particular, who chose a different path from the rest; who chose to stay deep beneath the Venetian canals to embrace and protect and watch over the dark things that make Halloween what it is today. Meet Nereena, the Fairy Queen of Halloween. And on one night a year, you just might meet the oozing, slinking, creeping things in her care.

We gave this book to our 3-yr-old niece and 5-yr-old nephew. Our niece is going through the boogeyman stage. She wants to hear the story and go through the pictures each night, with her Mom, still. Our nephew is starting to pick up on the clues and he didn't know anything about Venice. It seems that this is a book for children and adults to share, and then the kids can take off with it on their own.
My take as an Aunt: It explores history, presents mystery, and inspires wonder through intelligent narrative and attractive illustration.
Beyond Halloween, Nereena provides us with a safe path to walk through and address our own fears of the unfamiliar, and celebrate these differences. I appreciate the theme, and it seems to resonate with the kids.

Nereena the Fairy Queen of Halloween Richard James Boyd Vanessa Rumaz Boyd 9780615388878 Books Reviews
This enchanting book is the latest edition to my collection of "childhood" favorites. Beautiful rhythmic poetry and illustrations, so captivating to the ears and eyes of all ages. A sweet reminder of magic all around us if we take time to believe. Highly recommended as Halloween tradition! Thank you author and artist!
Nereena is a must for all fans of Halloween big and small. She is both mysterious and whimsical at the same time and the creepy creatures she keeps tenderly in her coat are delightful. Ms. Rumaz Boyd's illustrations are as breathtaking as is the city from which she hails and the story itself brings out the imagination in all of us. Hidden gardens and fairies are what we need to believe in no matter what our age. The scrumptious recipes in the back of the book are an added bonus! Can't wait to buy the i-pad version.
The FantaFairies series starts out with a bang. The attention to exquisite details should not be overlooked. From the quality of the illustrations to the cadence of the story, my 4, 11, and 13 year old children read it from cover to cove and each of them found something fascinating and different from the previous reader. My wife and I have it placed on a book shelf as a focal point for our Halloween decor (as I said we have kids). Of course it doesn't stay there for long before someone else picks it up. Kudos to Vanessa and Richard for putting this together. I look forward to laying my hands and eyes on another adventure, and have ordered my magic lenses from my favorite magic store.
The best way to keep imagination alive is to feed it--often and well. This book is a rich dessert that is both a visual delight and a tasty bite of whimsy that explains and entertains with the mystery of Halloween. The beneficent Queen of Halloween,Nereena, reminds us that goblins and ghosts and other symbols have their place in understanding life and enjoying our journey. Both the scariest and most comforting images come from the mind--a mind that is fed by experience and reading adventures. You and every child will enjoy reading this book over and over, not only for its art but its fun message. An added bonus is the opportunity to explore and explain to children the hidden codes, fun words, and pictures throughout the lush illustrations. After all, our imagination is what keeps us young, interested, and interesting.
Spirits and ghosts and fairies abound,
But must be engaged to roam around.
If you choose to stay young, then heed this advice
Let them ever delight you and don't think twice.
When our fears would dispel us,
Our wishes propel us,
Then our dreams must compel us
To be all we can be.
I read this to my six week old, three times - he loved the flow of the poem. I can see older children having fun looking for creatures in Nereena's coat, while I appreciated the opening history and beautiful, complex illustrations. Bonuses embedded poems about the various creatures in Nereena's coat featured on each page and the recipes for candied apples and lemonade at the back of the book. I'm looking forward to the next book in the Fantafairies series!
What a pleasure this book is! I don't know who enjoyed it the most, me or my 5-year-old. I read it out loud twice (she even wanted me to read every word of the two recipes in the back) and then she wanted to "read" it to me, which meant she made up her own poem. She followed the author's poetic beat and had fun making up spooky rhymes. Now she is on the floor creating her own Halloween book. The title of hers is "Nereena-Dot." Obviously an inspiring work of art for a child, but adults will love this book as well. The artwork is simply breathtaking. The more I stare at Nereena, the more I see. I'm off now to explore the FantaFairies website and see what else might be available by these talented artists.
My boys love this book and I can explain why in two quick points.
1) The rhythm. The main text of the book is written in a poetic form that is very rhythmic and conducive to dramatic flair. My boys laugh like crazy when I read this in my hammed up Vincent Price voice.
2) The pictures. There are variations of Nereena's image throughout the book and each page has a sub poem highlighting some aspect of the image. For us, the complex and somewhat hidden details in Nereena's image double as a "Where's Waldo" type seek and find.
This book presents a multifaceted experience that keeps my boys asking for it night after night - I highly recommend it!
